The Studio
Fragrance as a study of human experience
ao is a London-based fragrance house exploring the relationship between scent, feeling and the self.
Through creative experimentation and meticulous formulation, our enquiries into human experience take shape as fragrances that unfold on the skin.
The Human Variable
Some things are felt before they are understood.
The familiarity of a stranger.
The distance between two bodies.
A place recalled without its name.
The instinct to move closer.
These experiences resist fixed form.
We approach them through scent.
Botanicals and aroma molecules are placed in relation: familiar against strange, softness against intensity, the recognisable beside the unexpected.
An enquiry becomes an olfactory study.
The study becomes a composition.
Then it leaves our hands.
On the body, the formula encounters another set of variables: skin, warmth, chemistry, time.
And those less measurable: memory, association, instinct.
The composition takes on a particular expression. The same accord may recall different places, acquire different meanings, become familiar for different reasons.
Formulation opens into interpretation.
Scent becomes experience.
The study becomes yours.
We compose the fragrance.
The wearer completes the study.
Each composition begins with a question. How might proximity take olfactory form? What gives softness its presence? How can contrasting materials coexist without losing their character?
We explore these questions through formulation. Botanicals and aroma molecules are selected for their texture, diffusion, persistence and behaviour alongside other materials. An accord is developed, evaluated and refined, with attention to the balance of the whole.
Contrast gives the composition movement: a bright opening may reveal a darker structure; a delicate impression may carry unexpected depth. We consider how these relationships unfold over time, from the first encounter to the traces that remain.
The experiences named in our studies guide this process. They offer a starting point for discovery, leaving room for the wearer’s own response.
From formulation
to resonance
Five principles guide our approach to composition and the experience of wearing it.
Winder Ton
Winder Ton’s relationship with fragrance began at four, with a Looney Tunes scent inspired by Sylvester the Cat. What began as childhood fascination became an enduring interest in how scent can alter the way we experience ourselves and our surroundings.
With a scientific background and a curiosity about aromatic materials, Ton approaches perfumery through experimentation and close observation. Their practice considers both the structure of a fragrance and the less measurable associations it may evoke.
ao develops this enquiry into a study of human experience. Intimacy, attraction, connection and individuality become subjects to explore through composition, with each fragrance offering a distinct perspective.
“For me, fragrance is an intimate form of expression. We choose it, wear it, and discover something through that encounter. I’m interested in composing fragrances with enough character to invite a response, and enough openness for that response to remain personal.”
Through ao, Ton invites a more attentive relationship with scent: to observe its evolution, notice what it evokes, and allow personal meaning to emerge.
